“Please let me help!” I say. “I want to be an Edelweiss Pirate.”

“The answer is still no,” Albert replies.

“Will you be back for my band concert?” I ask.

“Of course. We’ll all be there.” Albert gives me a sly smile.

At school, my literature teacher calls Fritz to the front of the

class and makes him read a story aloud. The story says Jews are

our enemies. Fritz’s voice cracks.

Our classmates are laughing. I tell the teacher I’m sick and

run to the bathroom. I hum Saint Louis Blues until I feel calmer.

I wish I could do something, like Albert.
